Distraction from Life and Death of Art of Living

Creativity occurs in the moment, and in the moment we are timeless.” (More on this later) – this is the quote that has stuck with me and it is from the book The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron. For the past few months, I have been trying to follow through the above mentioned book/ course, and boy, does it need a lot of self-discipline and commitment. And let us just say I have successfully been able to come up with enough reasons and excuses to keep delaying it.

To add to that quote, I very recently came across one reel by Maddison Cate that said “Distraction is the death of art, whereas boredom is the birthplace of it.” Suddenly the dots connected about how I am always craving to be either painting or writing but often find myself occupied with things that are considered in society’s eyes as more important. Though at face value it seems like a small thing, the aggregate effect is that I end up starving myself of things that probably are the fuel to my soul. These so-called other important things about life are fine and needed to live “practically” but the minute they start becoming “the distraction” and start pulling you away from what you truly want is when the sky turns grey.

Applying the same logic when it comes to living a good life. The things we go after because we are conditioned to – inevitably become our distractions, forcing us to compromise the way we want to live or create our lives. Building the life you want starts with making changes today, but because we often dismiss it as we all are too busy in our current life, we keep delaying our desired life.

This necessitates a question – How can you and I stop getting tangled in the distractions and stop creating hurdles for the life we truly want to live? There is no one answer or right answer for that matter is what I have realised because all of it is subjective.

Through this blog, I generally talk about methods or practices that make it easy to live more mindfully. But when it comes to being able to balance life’s distractions, what society wants from you, what you want from yourself, and what your soul wants, etc. –  I think there is no one way that can be carved and that is what makes it beautiful as well as a journey we all are so afraid to undertake. It is scary and amazing when you realise that there is no right or wrong way to go about living life or creating life you crave. It could perfectly align with what you always wanted or could be something diametrically opposite, something that even your current self cannot accept.

So this time my dear readers I have no formula, no steps, no shadow work that I can suggest to you all. But there is one thing that I have been able to realise and something which I am going to keep repeating to myself like a mantra –  just the way creating art happens in the moment, creating life too happens in the moment. So no matter how tightly life’s distractions have got hold of you, do not forget to create a life, when I say create –  I mean saying things you would say had you been living your desired life, calibrating thoughts and perspective on life as per your desired life because that life is happening now, right in this moment.

When the distractions start to make you feel burned out and you start to feel the fatigue, is when the boredom will kick in. When that happens, do not try to find more distractions, let it come to you, sit with this fatigue, because it means the desired life is coming to life. Do not hold your breath. Live, live, live.
